The stalls that are all set up and ready for gates opening may look tempting but, to be honest, they can wait.

Instead, you should target the stalls that are still setting up because, again, with some clues that these are likely to be novices, some real bargains can be had when you catch the seller off guard whilst they are still unpacking.

You see, the majority of sellers haven’t worked their prices out at this point as they were more concerned with getting the car packed, getting there and then getting everything out on display. And it’s amazing how many first timers really didn’t plan for actually selling something! Sounds odd but it’s true.

So the scenario is that you are one of the first, if not the first to visit their stall and you spot a real gem. Now whether this gem is on the table or still in the car doesn’t matter, providing you don’t make it obvious that the item is an absolute bargain, it still should be yours at a knock down price and without too much haggling.

Why? Well, there are a few things in your favour here.

Firstly, pschycologically the seller is at a disadvantage as they have many items that you could have picked from as one of their first customers which can be very stressing and confusing. One the other hand, however, you only have ONE item to concentrate on; the one you wish to buy from them.

Be aware that, in this situation, many sellers are keen to get a sale on the board and a sale ‘before they’ve even finished setting up’ is a good morale booster for them. After all, a flying start is what we all want as sellers, right?

You should also find that, again for this reason, the haggling will be kept to a minimum on their part as they don’t want to lose that all important first sale but still need to complete their set up.

3. Nobody Likes A Smarty Pants!

Don’t give the game away by letting on to anyone the depth of your knowledge.

Showing off and making out that you are an expert only irriates people, especially nearby stall holders and this can, ultimately, push prices up (for you that is!)

It can sometimes be hard to hold back from telling the people around you what you know and what your speciality is. What’s worse is broadcasting to all and sundry that you have just got an ‘absolute peach of a bargain’ from the stall over there because they had no idea that what they’ve just sold to you for $2.00 is worth 20 times that.

You may as well have shouted at the top of your voice that the seller is a ‘clueless idiot’ because it will have pretty much the same effect. Word will get round and, at best, you will pay inflated prices or, at worst, the prices will be put up so much that it just wouldn’t be worth your while buying anything.

Instead, play it cool and tone down your interest in a particular item more from a point of likeabilty as opposed to collectibility. You may be bursting with excitement and itching to tell everyone about your dream find but you have to keep it a close secret.

4. Job Lots = $$$’s

Job lots and bundles are always worth taking a chance on, especially where books, magazines and postcards are concerned. A quick flick through should be enough to satisfy your curiousity and give you sufficient information on which to make an offer.

And when I say a quick flick through I MEAN A QUICK FLICK THROUGH! Make your offer, take your bundle and move on.

Don’t then start to fret and wonder what you may have gained or lost on a job lot; leave that for when you get home.

Taking my real interest into account, books and magazines, I have never once bought a job lot that hasn’t at least made my money back when broken down and sold singularly or in smaller lots. In reality, I have estimated the return on some job lots I have bought to be in excess of 2000% (yes, that is TWO THOUSAND PERCENT!)

Even a box of ornaments is worth a bid if you can see sufficient pieces in good condition. Old hand tools another one.

Remember, don’t dwell on a job lot. Take a fair look at the items but don’t take forever about it. Then a quick decision to buy or leave.

5. Collectibles v Antiques

Remember, you are dealing in collectibles, not antiques, so your expectations should be different.

When you are buying to sell, take into account that a few pounds spent at a boot sale is a few pounds profit sold further on down the line at the next boot sale (or wherever else you choose to sell).

And accept that this prize find worth $000’s happens often but you can’t expect everything you buy to realise such a return. Smaller cheaper items with a healthy gross profit turnaround are always the staple buy of anyone dealing in collectibles.

This being for several reasons:

• The purchases demand a small cash outlay.

• Although you could regularly realise 2-300% mark-up, even 50-100% for a quick turnaround gives you a healthy return and is still attractive to your future customer.

• An item bought for a small outlay but is slow in selling is not going to put too much of a strain on your finances in contrast to an item bought for $000’s that is giving you the same headache but on a much larger scale.

6. Mum’s The Word

If you are fortunate enough to find an absolute treasure, keep it to yourself. Don’t arouse suspicion and, as before, don’t give the game away that you are a bit of an expert.

This is where word can get around and other sellers start to ‘inflate’ their prices for you in case YOU find another beauty on their stall.

I have seen this happen so many times as stall holders up their asking prices to almost double for items when someone, who likes to pass themselves off as an ‘experienced dealer’, approaches.

Now knowing beforehand what the buyer is interested in, an experienced seller will up the price sufficiently confident that a gulible buyer will haggle down to the original price and think they have a good deal. No so!

If you feel that something is way over priced, possibly for this reason, you are best biding your time and leaving the item until later in the day as you should be confident that nobody else will buy it. You can then return to the seller toward the end of the day and make a reasonable offer of which there is more chance that they will accept.

7. No Need To Break The Bank

Avoid paying big bucks for anything at a boot sale unless you are absolutely certain of its worth.

As a rule, I never pay any more than $20 for a single item and rarely pay more than $50 for a job lot (the most I have paid to date for a job lot was $85 but it had an initial estimated value of over $400 at first glance so it was worth taking the chance on).

Remember, you are on the hunt for collectibles and it’s the value in items that you see but the seller doesn’t that nets you the real mark up.

 8. What The Eye Can’t See

 Don’t show your purchases off to the world by carrying them loosely in your hands. This will advertise to other sellers of what your are interested in and again an opportunity for them to increase the asking price before you get to them.

Instead, keep your purchases hidden by either taking a holdall or even carrier bags to put them in. If your car is nearby, even better. Take them back to the car.

Approaching a stall empty handed gives the seller no clues whatsoever as to your interests.

9. Sing A Song Of Sixpence,

A Pocket Full Of Change!

 Try to pay with coins and small change where you can.

This may seem a little odd but there are several reasons for this.

A watchful seller will spot any buyer constantly paying with notes and see you either as an easy target as you have the money to spend or that, again, you are a dealer. Either way, the prices go up!

On a more practical note, if you offer to pay for an item with a note and the seller has no change then there may be no sale and that’s that!

 10. Wait To Sell

 If you are selling that day as well buying, DON’T put anything up for sale that you have just bought from another stall minutes before. This is a BIG NO! NO!

Selling something you have just bought from another two stalls down not only hacks people off but you are blatantly saying that you ripped them off.

Word soon gets around and you could find yourself short of bargains in the future.

So Vienna is one of the few Cities in the world where you never feel hemmed on all sides by tall buildings. It is almost as thought the original builders though “we’ll build a park and put a few grand buildings in it here and there!”

That isn’t to say that Vienna isn’t just a little pompous, it sadly is. But then a City that is home to Mozart and has a style ratio of hundreds against other major Cities can be a little pompous if it jolly well likes surely!

It is just a shame that there are so many statues of fat Austrian Monarchs and their Large but Lovely Princesses, though maybe the City fathers should take some down because after you have seen the first dozen or so outside yet another beautiful grand baroque building you have seen them all!

Although of course that is not true there are so many more fat statues to discover outside of every building and of course hiding away inside as well just waiting to catch your eye!

As usual with major capital Cities there are just one or two or is that hundreds of places that you just mustn’t miss, ok one or two was optimistic, but here are five places that ‘thou shalt not miss!’

When you visit Vienna you have to Stephenansdom, known to the locals as “Steffi” or to us as “Little Stephen” this wonderful though rather dirty Cathedral is right in the centre of the City and can probably be forgiven its uncleanliness because it is not only Gothic, and let’s face it Gothic can be awfully grubby, it is adorable.

You can’t miss “Steffi’s” S?rm (the south tower) even if you wanted to it is 137m or 450ft high and was started in 1359 and only finished in 1433 and we are not talking hours in a 24 hour clock here, this amazingly tall building took 74 years to build so with so much to see you will be pleasantly surprised to find out that admittance is free.

After you have put your jaw back into place from gazing up at the S?rm you can enjoy the splendour of the Hofburg, the incredibly large Imperial Palace of the Hapsburg Emperors and home to them for over 600 years.

Here is the home of the famous Spanische Reitschule (Spanish Riding School) with its Lipizzaner horses, the Vienna Boys Choir who sing Mass every Sunday. Even more impressive some would say, are the Austrian equivalent of the British Crown Jewels, but they are bigger and better than the British ones though the British ones don’t have the 2,860 carat Colombian emerald for a start.

You need so much more than a few days to see even a small fraction of Vienna, when you have seen the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History), and close by the Museumsquartier and then the Schloss Sch?unn you will still have more to take in and you mustn’t forget to do some shopping in probably the best shopping district in Europe.

Staying in Vienna is great fun and that makes Vienna very popular with tourists, it is a year round tourist destination that gets particularly busy in the Spring, late Summer and of course at Christmas so be clever when you book your hotel and shop around for a bargain.
